Wisonsin's American history first began with the French, when the land was used to push the fur trade across the country. Eventually, permanent settlers made Wisconsin a stopping point for the trading of furs. After the Revolutionary War, the United States took control of the state, and its economy shifted from fur trade to the mining of lead in Mineral Point and Dodgeville. During the Civil War, Wisconsin played a huge role, providing more than 90,000 troops to fight with the Union and declaring the Fugitive Slave Law unconstitutional. Today, the state is known for milling, farming and tourism.
