With one of the best riverfronts and coastal views in the United States and a lively downtown that is full of southern arts and culture, Wilmington is one of the most popular cities in North Carolina. A number of historic areas are scattered throughout the city, such as the Fort Fisher Historic Area and the Sunset Park Historic District.
While there is no doubt that industry and research are the primary employing sectors in Wilmington, especially since the city is located on the Research Coast of North Carolina, there are many other sectors that support Wilmington’s economy. These include tourism and leisure, film production, government, education, finance and banking, retail and commerce, and production. The top three employers in the city are the New Hanover Health Network, the New Hanover County Schools, and General Electric.
