Plenty of activities are available at the state's coast, including places such as Misquamicut Beach, Second Beach and Easton's Beach. Here, you can surf, swim or head to a bay and catch fish. If you'd rather stay indoors, you might enjoy visiting one of the state's several museums. The Museum of Work and Culture is home to historical exhibits chronicling the stories of mill towns that Rhode Island was built on. In 1636, Roger Williams established a region granted to him by Native Americans and called it Providence. Williams had previously been banned from Massachusetts Bay for differing beliefs, so Providence became known as a place where people might enjoy religious freedom. Several other communities developed nearby, such as Portsmouth and Newport, and in the mid-seventeenth century, they joined to declare themselves the Rhode Island colony. Rhode Island became the first of the original 13 colonies to propose separation from Britain. During the Revolutionary War that ensued, the state played a major role, and it became the final colony after the war to ratify the United States Constitution. In more modern history, the state has grown to be one of the most densely populated in the United States, and it continues to offer residents the charm and beauty that has always made it remarkable.
