Perhaps the most famous chapter in Montana's history was its role in the 'gold rush' of the 1860s. The discovery of gold, silver, copper, lead and coal caused huge numbers of miners to travel to the region. Virginia City was originally founded as a result of a substantial gold deposit being found in the area, and the largest mining operations during that time were carried out in the city of Butte. Mining would go on to shape the state's infrastructure up to present day, with its economy still largely driven by the harvesting of gas, oil and various minerals.
