By 1844, it was incorporated, and the name became Milton. It was only one year later that the United States welcomed the Territory of Florida as the 27th state. There is now a wide range of population ages, with the median age of 34 years. The population has increased from about 7000 residents in the 2000 census to close to 9500 residents today. 27.3% of the population is under the age of 18 and about 16.8% are over the age of 65 years.
