Part of the San Antonio metropolitan area, Helotes, Texas is a city in Bexar County, located 16 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio. The community has residential single family homes within a total area of 6.6 square miles. Helotes is surrounded by the Texas Hill County scenic beauty and was named the Best Small Town in Texas to Raise Kids by Bloomberg BusinessWeek in 2013.
A former farming community, Helotes retains a small town feel and is a highly desirable suburb. Old Town Helotes has been renovated, with the downtown featuring a variety for stores and restaurants. Old Town Market Days is held every first Saturday of the month, where shoppers can find jewelry, arts and crafts, and fresh produce. Helotes gets slightly below the national average of rainfall at 32 inches of rain per year and no annual snowfall. The area sees about 225 sunny days during the year, with the July high temperature at 95 degrees and the average January low temperature at 43 degrees.
Most Helotes residents work in management, business, and finance occupations, followed by sales, office, or administration support jobs. Nearby San Antonio has a strong economy and a major business community. AT&T, Valero Energy, Clear Channel Communications and Tesoro Petroleum have their headquarters located in San Antonio, and banking and finance are major industries. The South Texas Medical Center is one of the largest in Texas and boasts a large medical and biotech research center. Helotes has experienced a housing boom, particularly after farmland was sold to developers. The opening of the historic John T. Floore County Store in 1946 marked the turning point from a rural economy to a commercial one. Floore’s is a Texas Honky Tonk that has hosted major musical events with many country, rock, and R&B singers. Besides concerts, Floore’s is known for authentic Texan cuisine. Helotes has four elementary schools and a high school, with students needing to travel to San Antonio for the nearest middle school.
