Before becoming part of the United States, Hawaii was an independent nation. In the late 1700s, Hawaiian chiefs fought amongst themselves for power until control of the islands went to a single king: King Kamehameha the Great. Kamehameha established a dynasty that maintained power until 1872. In the early 19th century, American missionaries traveled to Hawaii and converted many of the native people to Christianity. After King Kamehameha V died and did not leave an heir, political unrest struck Hawaii and the United States and Britain intervened. For many years, Hawaii was a territory of the United States, and did not officially become a state until 1959.
