The national park's major attractions are Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, Thurston Lava Tube, a natural tunnel that you can walk through, and the Steam Vents, where hot steam rises from within the Earth. If you love sea life, Hawaii also hosts whale and manta ray watching. There's no shortage of things to do in Hawaii, and the beautiful scenery and beaches are a source of endless entertainment.
Before becoming part of the United States, Hawaii was an independent nation. In the late 1700s, Hawaiian chiefs fought amongst themselves for power until control of the islands went to a single king: King Kamehameha the Great. Kamehameha established a dynasty that maintained power until 1872. In the early 19th century, American missionaries traveled to Hawaii and converted many of the native people to Christianity. After King Kamehameha V died and did not leave an heir, political unrest struck Hawaii and the United States and Britain intervened. For many years, Hawaii was a territory of the United States, and did not officially become a state until 1959.
