Have some fun at the Des Moines Water Works Park. The area spans over 1,500 acres of wooded area and is a popular spot for joggers. Catch a sunrise or sunset at the Principal Riverwalk. This one-mile trail makes a loop, connecting the east and west sides of downtown and giving you access to the botanical gardens, an amphitheater, and more. The park provides barbeque areas along with spaces for picnicking. Go skating or check out some of the local skateboarders at the Lauridsen Skate Park, one of the largest skateparks in the nation. This 88,000-square-foot facility is located towards the northern end of the Principal Riverwalk.

Des Moines Schools

The Des Moines Independent Community School District is the primary school provider in the area, with more than 33,000 students and nearly 5,000 teachers on over 60 campuses. Students have a few local higher education institutions to choose from, such as Drake University and Grand View University. Drake University, a private university, is considered one of the finest institutions in the Midwest, enrolling more than 3,000 undergraduates. Grand View University is a smaller private institution located just 10 minutes from downtown. Students have over 40 programs to choose from.

Commuting in Des Moines is a breeze, with commute times averaging about 19 minutes, several minutes below the national average.
